Rapidly improving Goldream ripe to give Cowell another Coolmore Nunthorpe success

A maximum field of 20 runners has been declared for the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Friday, including Robert Cowell's King's Stand Stakes winner, Goldream

Friday’s 20-runner field for the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes is full of big names, including the sensational Queen Mary Stakes winner, Acapulco, who has crossed the Atlantic to take part, and the popular Irish veteran, Sole Power, bidding for his third success in this race.

But the only member of the line-up to have already triumphed in a Champions Series race this season is Goldream, who beat Medicean Man and Muthmir in a thrilling finish to the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Goldream’s trainer, Robert Cowell, said:

“Goldream had a well-deserved three weeks off after Ascot and looks a picture now. He runs well fresh.”

“We never considered running him between Ascot and the Coolmore Nunthorpe because we didn’t think Goodwood would suit him and we also wanted to avoid carrying a Group 1 penalty in a lesser race.”

“He wants fast ground – he doesn’t really operate on anything slower than ‘good’.”

“He is not dissimilar to Jwala, who won this race for me two years ago. He is quick out of the gate, likes to race prominently and likes a bit of space around him.”

“He seems to be improving at a rapid rate of knots and now has all the attributes of a seriously good five furlong horse – he has the right racing style, the right looks, the right size and the right heart for a battle.”

“If he wins on Friday I would have to consider him to be the best horse that I have trained as that would make him my first dual Group 1 winner.”

The full list of runners (with jockeys) is as follows:

Goldream (Martin Harley), Justice Day (Hayley Turner), Justineo (William Buick), Line Of Reason (Graham Lee), Medicean Man (Phillip Makin), Mirza (Ioritz Mendizabal), Move In Time (Danny Tudhope), Music Master (Dane O’Neill), Muthmir (Paul Hanagan), Pearl Secret (Oisin Murphy), Sole Poer (Frankie Dettori), Stepper Point (Martin Dwyer), Take Cover (Pat Smullen), Canny Kool (Silvestre de Sousa), Cotai Glory (Graham Gibbons), Mattmu (David Allan), Profitable (James Doyle),  Mecca’s Angel (Paul Mulrennan), Wind Fire (Jamie Spencer), Acapulco (Irad Ortiz).
