Unbeaten in his first five starts before finishing third in unfavourable conditions at Royal Ascot in the Gold Cup, Dermot Weld’s five-year-old was unable to bounce back to winning ways in the Irish St Leger behind Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old star, Order of St George.

Forgotten Rules and Order of St George will now go head-to-head in an exciting battle on Champions Day.

Fiona Craig, breeding advisor Moyglare Stud (Forgotten Rules’ owners), told the Press Association: “We were a little bit disappointed, but I think two miles is probably just his trip.

"He had to do it himself a little bit towards the front and he probably just lacks the turn of foot at that level over a mile and three-quarters.

"He’s come out of it fine and it has always been the plan to take him back to Ascot for the stayers’ cup (QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup."
