Solow indicated he will again be a formidable force in this year’s QIPCO British Champion Series when gaining a decisive victory on his return on the all-weather at Chantilly today.
The Freddy Head-trained grey, the world’s highest-rated miler, looked a picture of good health in the paddock and gave weight and a beating to five rivals in the Prix Montjeu despite being stopped in his run about a furlong and a half from home when Maxime Guyon initially cut towards the inside rail to challenge.
That gave Vadamos, his principal rival, the initiative but Guyon still had plenty of horse under him and Solow, sent off at 1-6, quickly put him in his place when switched to his outside.
Solow, who was extending his winning sequence to ten, limbered up in the same mile event last year before reeling off five successive victories in group one contests.
The globetrotting gelding’s next assignment will be the Dubai Turf at Meydan later this month – a race he won in dazzling fashion last year.
He then went on to dominate the mile category of the British Champion Series with thrilling victories in the Queen Anne Stakes, Qatar Sussex Stakes and QIPCO-sponsored Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He is likely to bid for repeat triumphs this year.
