Captain Cat is a giant gelding who has taken a long time to grow into his frame and fulfil the promise he first showed soon after joining the stable of Roger Charlton, having been purchased for £131,250 as a foal.
Charlton’s patience and refusal to rush the son of Dylan Thomas has borne fruit – after running just six times and winning only once up to late autumn of his four-year-old season, Captain Cat has blossomed since winning an ordinary Kempton handicap at the backend of 2013.
He has landed two Group 3 contests and twice been placed in Group 2 company. His best run was a second in the Group 2 Shadwell Joel Stakes at Newmarket in September 2014.
He also gave a good account when finish fifth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day.
Captain Cat has already run three times on the all-weather in 2016, winning a conditions event at the expense of the useful Sloane Square over a mile at Lingfield on his latest start.
