Derby-winning trainer William Haggas enjoyed two more Royal Ascot winners in 2019 but he has still yet to saddle a Group 1 winner at the meeting.
The Newmarket trainer looked like ending his elusive quest when One Master swept to the front in the Queen Anne Stakes inside the final furlong but she could not quite finish the job off and had to settle for third behind Lord Glitters and Beat The Bank.
“I’m not sure she quite got home, and that’s what the jockey [Pierre-Charles Boudot] thought,” Haggas said. “She ran a great race, travelled well and I’m delighted with her.
“She came to win, but just flattened out the last bit, and in this company doesn’t quite get the mile. She ran a commendable race, and I knew she would come forward from her run in Ireland, where she became very tired.”
Next time, it was also a case of so close, but so far, in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket when she was beaten a neck by Veracious.
The Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, the feature on the second day of the 2019 Moёt & Chandon July Festival, produced another thrilling finish, with Veracious (6/1) getting the better of One Master (100/30) by a neck.
James Doyle, her rider, suggested that the ground may have been a little quick for the daughter of Fastnet Rock, saying: “She is so brave and I travelled into the race well, but she tightened up a bit when I got after her and she didn’t appear to let down on me.”
Haggas added: “It was a shame not to win. She is very game, but she doesn’t like fast ground.”
The ground was good when One Maser contested the Group 1 Larc Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on her latest start. She can another good account to be fifth, not being beaten far behind Advertise.
Back on a much softer surface, she won a second Prix de la Foret and then, dropped to six furlongs, ran a cracker when an unlucky-in-running length second to Donjuan Triumphant in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint.
Haggas said: “I need to watch it again but she was maybe a bit unfortunate, although the winner won well. She ran a very good race though.”
