Pedigrees count for plenty of racing and David Egan is undoubtedly bred for the job.

His father, John, has ridden more than 1,000 winners and is still going strong at the age of 50. His mother is Sandra Hughes,  who trained the Irish Grand National winner Thunder And Roses; his uncle is the champion jockey-turned-trainer Richard Hughes.

His grandfather was the late Dessie Hughes, rider of Monksfield and the trainer of dual Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace.

Brought up around horses on The Curragh, 20-year-old Egan has lived in Newmarket since he left school.

He was champion apprentice in 2017 and is getting plenty of opportunities for leading Newmarket trainer Roger Varian, including when third on Qabala in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas. His father also rode in the fillies’ Classic.

His breakthrough Royal Ascot victory also came in 2019 aboard Daahyeh in the Albany Stakes.

Egan himself looks set for a long and successful time in the saddle. He is a name to remember over the coming years in the Series.
